Abstract

Plasma imaging diagnostics are known as a powerful method for capturing the spatial structures of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) phenomena and turbulence and elucidating their physical mechanisms. In general, to connect a new diagnostic technique with physics research, it is necessary to advance data analysis and the interpretation of observations in an integrated manner, in addition to developing the diagnostic equipment. This seminar will provide an overview of research using soft X-ray tomography and electron cyclotron emission (ECE) imaging, and introduce the development of a microwave imaging reflectometer (MIR) and its application to plasma fluctuation measurements. Based on the results obtained and diagnostic challenges encountered with devices such as TPE-RX, which was installed at AIST, and LHD, which operated at the National Institute for Fusion Science, the seminar will describe a concept for introducing MIR to GAMMA 10/PDX using a broadband antenna. In particular, it will discuss the potential for research distinguishing MHD phenomena from drift waves and turbulence by leveraging the magnetic-field structure of a linear device and controlling pressure and potential through heating. It will also express thoughts on the transmission of microwave diagnostic technology and the development of young researchers.
